After placing 3rd for the season, Mortlake managed to secure a Grand Final spot by beating Camperdown Golf the fortnight before.
Going into the Grand Final held last week at Camperdown Golf BC, Cobden were expected to win the Grand Final, being minor Premiers and winning their match against Terang 2.
The Grand Final team consisted of M Lynam (s), A Puzey, D Caudle; D Murray (s), E Robinson, K O’Shannessy; I MacDonald (s), J Wallace, D McRae.
After a slow start from Cobden, they managed to match Mortlake after 36 ends at 28 shots a piece.
The next 39 ends will be a titanic struggle between the two teams until the end of the match. The two teams up to this point, were drawn 5 times, with 3 being on I MacDonald’s rink.
The tussle continued throughout the afternoon and after 48 ends, Mortlake were 7 up over Cobden, 40-33. From there Cobden started to claw their deficit back.
After 60 ends completed, the margins had closed slightly for Cobden to be within 3 shots of Mortlake, 43-46.
6 ends later, Cobden were within two shots overall, 48 to Mortlake’s 50.
With the penultimate ends to play, Mortlake were two up on Cobden, 54-52 after 72 ends.
At the close of play, I MacDonald lost to B Hammond, 18-19; D Murray won over J O’Shea, 20-19 and M Lynam won over D McLeod, 19-16, securing the Grand Final victory for Mortlake 57 to Cobden’s 54.
